How to read the Angola desk

Portuguese is the language of the Luanda press. If you cannot read it, you are not reading Angola. You are reading a wire about oil.

The state paper is Jornal de Angola. The state wire is ANGOP. TPA and Rádio Nacional are the public broadcaster and the radio. None of those four is independent of the government. They still belong on this list: they are how the palace talks, and they are what a large part of the country actually hears. Treat them as the official version, not as a second source.

For a second look: Club-K (often diaspora-facing, sharper, not a daily of record), Expansão (business — oil, construction, the budget), Novo Jornal, O País, Folha 8, and Ver Angola. They disagree with each other. That is the point of a list. We do not score them for virtue.

English on Angola is almost always energy — TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, ANPG blocks, a discovery, a five-year plan. Reuters and the majors file that from Luanda or from a desk far from it. It is real news. It is not the musseque, the church, or the opposition. If the only Angola you see is a barrel of oil, you are not using this desk.

Umbundu, Kimbundu, and Kikongo are widely spoken. They are not the language of these sites. The press that still publishes at national scale is Portuguese. That is a colonial leftover and a present fact. We do not pretend otherwise.

This search is the country. Angola, Indiana, is a town in Steuben County. We pin the wires to Luanda so a high-school score does not become the hot issue. If Indiana still leaks through, use Contact.

The names are the links. The line under each name is a type — newspaper, agency, broadcaster — not a grade. Open two doors, one official and one not, before you decide what happened.
