How to read the United States desk
English is the language of this list. Spanish-language US press exists and matters; it is not what this first list is for. We may add it. We have not, yet.
The United States does not have a state paper in the Luanda sense. It has national brands that behave like one: the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, AP, Reuters, NPR, PBS, CNN. They are not the same animal. AP and Reuters are wires. NPR and PBS are public. The Times and the Post are newspapers with opinions pages. CNN is a broadcaster. Politico is a trade paper that escaped the Beltway. USA Today is the national popular paper. We tag them so you can see the door, not so we can rank them.
This list is national. It is not your city's paper. If you want Dallas or Honolulu, this desk will disappoint you. That is a later problem, not a claim that local US press does not exist.
English-language US news floods every other desk on this site. That is why Georgia the country and Chad the country need pinning. On this page, the flood is the point.
We do not settle the American argument. We list the doors. Open two that do not share an owner before you decide what happened.
