How to read the China desk
Mandarin is the language of the Chinese press. If you cannot read it, you are reading the English state layer: Xinhua, CCTV, CGTN, China Daily, Global Times, and People's Daily. That is how Beijing talks to you. Treat it as the official version.
Caixin and The Paper are not that layer. They are still Chinese newsrooms, publishing under Chinese rules. "Not the state wire" is not the same sentence as "independent."
This desk is the People's Republic. Taiwan has its own page. Hong Kong has its own page. Do not let a wire file Taipei as Beijing, or a Hong Kong story as the national news.
Open one state door and one that is not. If you want the argument rather than the translation, the second door is in Chinese.
